An open conversation about desire and intimacy in (peri-)menopause.

Düsseldorf, Germany / Wasserbillig, Luxembourg, April 2026.

As part of the SEX NOW exhibition at NRW-Forum Düsseldorf, an event by pjur and Dr. Britta Kühlmann created a space for open and contemporary conversations about sexuality in (peri-)menopause. The focus was on a topic that affects many people but is still too rarely discussed publicly and in a nuanced way: desire and sexual well-being during a phase of physical and emotional change – the (peri-)menopause.

The event addressed key questions surrounding body perception and intimacy and opened new perspectives on sexuality. Embedded in the SEX NOW exhibition, which explores contemporary perspectives on sexuality, body images, and social norms, a framework for open and reflective exchange was created.

The discussion partner

Dr. Britta Kühlmann is a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery with interdisciplinary expertise in dermatology and medical research. She follows a holistic approach and is deeply engaged with the connections between (peri-)menopause, hormonal changes, and overall well-being. In addition to her clinical work, she is internationally recognized for her research in skin aging and wound healing and has received multiple awards, including from the Wound Healing Society (WHS).

Together, the discussion explored the role of sexual well-being in this phase of life, how societal narratives around (peri-)menopause and sexuality are evolving, and why an open, informed approach to intimacy is becoming increasingly important. The panel was moderated by well-known host and TV reporter Sarah Zaczek, who provided clear structure and additional perspectives to the discussion. “Sexual well-being is an essential component of quality of life at every stage of life. Especially around (peri-)menopause, there is a need for more education, more openness, and spaces for honest exchange. It was even more impressive to see how openly participants discussed, shared personal experiences, and truly engaged with the topic,” said Jennifer Parry, Brand Director at pjur.

Participants included doctors, editors, PR professionals, and multipliers from business and trade, all within an age group relevant to the topic and bringing diverse perspectives to the discussion.

New perspectives on intimacy

The positive response and active participation of attendees highlighted the strong need for open conversations on this topic. Questions and input from the audience led to a multi-layered dialogue that made different perspectives visible and challenged existing patterns of thought. The event demonstrated that the societal approach to sexuality is evolving: topics such as body awareness, communication, and individual needs are increasingly coming into focus and contribute to a more nuanced understanding of intimacy.
