Sexuality is constantly evolving. While some people discover their preferences early on, others uncover new sides of themselves over time. At the same time, openness towards topics that were once only visible within small communities continues to grow. These include BDSM, fetish culture and so-called Hedonic Parties. People encountering these terms for the first time are often faced with a mixture of curiosity, uncertainty and numerous misconceptions, as well as questions such as “What exactly is BDSM?” and “How does it actually work?”
Many perceptions are shaped by films, social media or other people’s stories. What these experiences look like in reality is discussed far less often. For many participants, however, the focus lies on trust and the conscious exploration of personal boundaries. BDSM can be practiced in many different ways and encompasses far more than the images commonly associated with it.
For this article, we spoke with Robert. He runs Elysium Playsuite in Krakow, a private BDSM studio that offers both experienced visitors and curious newcomers a protected environment for new experiences. In this interview, he talks about his own journey into the BDSM scene, Hedonic Parties and why openness and mutual consent form the foundation of every experience.
BDSM Between Curiosity, Trust and New Perspectives
“For many people, BDSM begins with curiosity,” he explains.
His own journey into the BDSM world did not start with a conscious decision but developed gradually over time. Together with a very open-minded partner, he experimented with different practices and discovered new forms of intimacy and emotional experience. What began as initial exploration eventually developed into a deeper interest in the many facets of BDSM. What fascinated him most was the opportunity to temporarily leave everyday life behind and step into a different role. He describes BDSM as a space where familiar structures and expectations can move into the background for a while. It offers people the chance to discover new sides of themselves, explore different dynamics and experience situations that differ significantly from everyday life.
“We found a space where we could transform our everyday life into a completely different theatre of sensations and emotions.” This idea of consciously stepping into different roles also plays a central role in his own project. With Elysium Playsuite, he wanted to create a place that welcomes both curious beginners and experienced BDSM practitioners. The rooms have been carefully designed to immerse visitors in a unique atmosphere. Lighting concepts, colours, furniture, equipment and accessories all contribute to an environment that combines fantasy and experience.
At the same time, he does not see the studio as an exclusive place reserved for people who fully identify with the BDSM lifestyle. Instead, he views it as an opportunity to gain new experiences, enrich relationships and discover previously unexplored aspects of oneself. For many visitors, curiosity and the desire for new experiences are far more important than belonging to a specific scene.
Misconceptions and Reality
Although BDSM is more visible today than it was a few years ago, many misconceptions still surround the topic. Outsiders often associate BDSM with violence, coercion or crossing boundaries. In Robert’s view, these assumptions represent some of the most significant misunderstandings about BDSM.
In reality, BDSM is based on clear agreements, mutual trust and the voluntary consent of everyone involved. Communication plays a central role. Boundaries are discussed, desires are communicated and experiences are created together. Many aspects that may initially appear unusual to outsiders stem directly from this conscious focus on trust and responsibility. “A fairly common, yet deeply flawed and harmful stereotype is equating BDSM with violence and assuming that the activities are somehow forced.”
For him, this highlights the gap between public perception and actual practice. While outsiders often focus on isolated images or representations, many people experience BDSM primarily as a space for communication and personal growth.

Hedonic Parties as a Place for Connection and Inspiration
Alongside his work at the studio, Robert occasionally attends Hedonic Parties and BDSM events. Hedonic Parties are adult events that combine elements of nightlife, eroticism, fetish culture and BDSM within a shared setting. Depending on the event, visitors can meet like-minded people, gain new impressions and explore different aspects of sexuality and intimacy. He sometimes attends these events as an exhibitor and uses the opportunity to engage with interested visitors. In his view, such events offer an accessible introduction to a topic that many people have had little exposure to before.
Especially for newcomers, these events can provide an opportunity to ask questions and experience the atmosphere firsthand. Some visitors simply observe, while others engage in conversations or find inspiration in the various forms of play they encounter. At the same time, these environments encourage open exchanges and conversations between people with different levels of experience.
What Robert finds particularly fascinating is the diversity of people who come together at these events. They create space for encounters, new perspectives and individual experiences. Everyone decides for themselves how deeply they wish to immerse in this world. For some, it remains a one-time experience; for others, it becomes the beginning of a long-term interest.
Openness Through Community
Another aspect Robert frequently observes is the effect these events can have on people’s self-perception. Individuals who have kept their fantasies or interests to themselves often discover for the first time that they are not alone in their thoughts.
Connecting with like-minded people can help reduce insecurities and encourage a less critical view of one’s own desires. Many participants come to realise that sexual preferences and fantasies are far more diverse than society often assumes.
“Many people with BDSM fantasies feel as though their desires are strange or wrong. Being surrounded by like-minded people quickly shows them that this simply isn’t the case.” According to him, experiences like these can encourage people to approach sexuality and personal desires with greater openness.
Between Atmosphere, Equipment and Experience
For many people, BDSM and fetish culture also involve distinctive materials and visual aesthetics. Latex and rubber clothing have played an important role for decades and continue to shape the visual identity of the scene. At fetish events and BDSM gatherings, outfits are often seen as an integral part of the overall experience and contribute significantly to the atmosphere.
Anyone who wears latex or rubber is also familiar with the practical challenges these materials can present. Products such as pjur CULT Dressing Aid have been specifically developed to make it easier to put on tight-fitting latex and rubber clothing while providing a comfortable feeling on the skin. In addition, pjur CULT Ultra Shine helps intensify the characteristic shine of latex while simultaneously caring for the material. The choice of suitable products can also play an important role during BDSM sessions or when using larger toys. For more intensive applications, pjur POWER is a suitable option. This hybrid lubricant, based primarily on water with a small silicone component, features a creamy consistency and exceptionally long-lasting glide, making it ideal for more demanding scenarios. Regardless of how individually BDSM or fetish culture is practiced, it becomes clear that communication and trust are often complemented by the right accessories and support products. Often, it is precisely these small details that increase comfort and allow people to fully immerse themselves in the experience.
New Experiences Without Expectations
Throughout our conversation, it becomes clear that Robert sees BDSM primarily as an opportunity for self-discovery. It is not about meeting expectations or following a fixed idea of sexuality. Instead, he views curiosity as an important starting point for personal exploration and growth. Anyone interested in BDSM should take their time and find their own path. Not every experience has to be intense, and not every fantasy develops into a long-term interest. Often, simply being willing to try something new and consciously explore one’s desires is enough. “Entering this world step by step, especially with a special person by your side, is a wonderful journey.”
Even if someone ultimately discovers that certain aspects do not fit into their life, something valuable often remains: new experiences, new perspectives and a better understanding of their own preferences, boundaries and desires.
Conclusion
Our conversation with Robert shows that BDSM and Hedonic Parties are often experienced very differently from what many people initially assume. At its core are communication, mutual consent, and the opportunity to discover oneself from a new perspective. For some, it remains a one-time experience. Others discover interests they wish to explore further. Perhaps that is the most fascinating aspect of all: there is no fixed path and no expectations that must be fulfilled. Every person decides for themselves which experience they want to have and what role curiosity should play along the way.
